As the new year draws closer, many people take the last few weeks of December to think about what they would like to improve in the coming months. In fact, it’s estimated that about 50% of Americans make resolutions. Oftentimes, these goals are related to your physical well-being. Why not include your oral health, too? If you would like a healthier, happier smile in 2023, here are five resolutions to help you achieve one!

#1. Floss Those Pearly Whites

According to a recent study, nearly 33% of Americans don’t floss regularly or at all. But flossing is essential for a healthy smile. After all, brushing alone only cleans about 60% of your mouth. By cleaning between your teeth daily, you will keep tooth decay and gum disease at bay. To make it part of your daily routine, set a reminder on your phone or place a friendly note on your bathroom mirror.

#2. Get a New Toothbrush Every Three Months

The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush (or toothbrush head, for electric alternatives) every three months. Since it is not designed to last longer than six months, extended use can cause the bristles to become frayed. Additionally, over time, food particles, plaque, and bacteria can begin to grow on it. To easily replace your toothbrush, purchase them in bulk so you always have fresh ones on hand.

#3. Choose Smile-Friendly Foods

The old saying goes, “You are what you eat.” This includes the state of your mouth! If you consume a lot of sugar, then your teeth are at higher risk of developing decay and plaque. On the other hand, if you eat nutrient-rich foods, like lean protein, fresh fruits, and crunchy veggies, your pearly whites will be healthy from the inside out.

#4. Say Goodbye to Certain Dental Habits

Do you use tobacco products? Bite your nails? Use your teeth as tools to open things? These dental habits can harm your teeth, causing them to wear down over time. Bid farewell to these practices by replacing them with chewing sugar-free gum, having nail clippers on hand, and having handy tools available to open things.

#5. Visit Your Dentist Twice a Year

Your routine dental checkups play a crucial role in both your oral and overall health. Not only does your dentist deep clean your teeth, but they also screen for oral cancer and check for other dental issues to catch anything that could turn into a major problem down the line. At the start of a new year, many dentists begin accepting new patients. There would be no better time than now to schedule your biannual appointments!

The new year brings so many wonderful possibilities, including a more radiant, healthy smile. With these resolutions, 2023 can be your brightest year yet!
